Just good music

Last.fm is a great idea. Uninterputed real music. No babble, no ads, just good music.

And it gets better and better as you tell it what you like.

Not sure if the bandwidth would cope if everyone at work joined as well. But 16kb/s is not too bad.

flickr

Okay, I followed the flock and joined flickr. It is pretty sweet.

But think Ill keep using my coppermine album at foto.flurdy.com.

Got Dugg

My postfix howto got dug at digg.com.

Seems they were mostly concerned with the GNU/Linux comment though...

Eclipse WTP Howto

The Eclipse web tools project seems to have matured enough so Ive started to switch to Eclipse from Netbeans (sort of).

Ive always prefered Netbeans as it is aimed at java web developers and works as such straight away. Eclipse with its huge following needed too much tweaking, immature/costly plugins etc to get there so I never bothered before. With each iterative Netbeans just got better and better, version 5 is so integrated with Ant, Tomcat, Jboss et all so makes web app development so easy.

However now that WTP has reached version 1.0 I thought I'd check it out again. And I was impressed. Ant integration is good, not quite netbeans level, but different.
Tomcat integration is good, and standard web tools is perhaps better than netbeans.
Im still not 100% happy with it though. The project structure is not as configurable, the tomcat sync does use my ant scripts to include libs and confs. But impressed.

In the end I created a quick howto on installing Eclipse WTP in Ubuntu.

I still recommened Netbeans 5 for all web app developers, however Eclipse WTP is getting there.

Ski

Ah winter, cant beat it.

As I was born in Telemark,
it must be in my blood,
but I love winter time.

However I hate the slushy gray period before. Unfortunetly living in England, there is no proper winter, just 5 months of gray autumn. :(

And I dont like people complaining of it being too cold. It never is, just bad clothing. As they say, if it gets colder, add another layer of clothing. But if it gets warmer there is a finite layers you can take off....

Breezed up

Finally got round to upgrade to Ubuntu's latest version, Breezy Badger (5.10).

Received my CDs from ubuntu/canonical ShipIt service, so that made the upgrades easier, even though I had downloaded the Iso.

First impression is not much has changed, which is good as Hoary was good before. Starting to notice nice little tweaks, like lineakd now looks integrated, sony laptop buttons works better, nicer boot up splash screen, etc.

So I got no excuse not to update my postfix howto now...

Data missuse

Found while searching google on my name, that apperently I like "3D Golden Warrior"! Never heard of nor played the game, nor can I imagine that I ever will.

I have however downloaded Sensible Soccer, so looks like they missuse their customer data. So basically dont trust gamemobile.co.uk! (Though it was themobilegamer.co.uk I used)

BELAY THAT ORDER! I have spoken to the site and it is all a simple mistake. Basically my user id was an old one and so got two accounts interlinked. Simple db error. Ive made the same mistake several times myself, when the genrator gets reset or dbs merge... So they are not so bad after all

Postfix

Started the 4th edition of my howto on setting up a postfix mail server in linux.

Ubuntu, the distro it is based upon has released a new version, so the howto needs updating. Also integrating postgrey, an excellent spam reduction method. And try to include some fixes and tweaks from last time.

Also started to encourage people to use the ubuntu forums, instead of contacting me regarding the howto, as I have weeks of unreplied messages to look at....

Found this page on lambie.org, nice to get praised some times!

Wish List

Finally made some progress with my much delayed wishlist project. Convinced a previous owner of wishlist.sf.net to hand the project over as he was not pursuing it.

I have started to set up the file structure, and will soon start to plan the logic and objects needed.

Will then advertise for help with the development. Later on, the project will definetly need some designer help, otherwise if it is too ugly; no-one will use it.

Have a look and see what you think : sf.net/projects/wishlist

K600i

Love my new phone, the sony ericsson k600i. Camera is a beauty, not 2MP of the 750 and 800s, but 1.3 which is nearly as good. Crisp and clear. My old Treo 600 camera is ancient compared to it.

Just come back from holiday in Ibiza and used the camera on my phone more than my 5MP pentax proper camera.

Thank god I only know a few other people with 3G phones otherwise I'd waste too much money on video calls!

Only downside is that it does not have a full qwerty keyboard ala the Treo. But it cant have everything.
